Active Futures

light bulbActivFutures is one of the latest initiatives launched in the local area aiming to help young people who are not engaged by traditional learning.

The programme which is being run by the local sport and health charity, SportActiv, looks to give children the opportunity to benefit from smaller learning groups and a tailored schedule all within a sporting environment.

ActivFutures has proved very successful at engaging young people who have regular problems at school and tend to be disruptive, even on the verge of exclusion. The programme gets participants involved in an ASDAN accredited qualification in Sport and Health whilst learning life skills and helping the community.

During the scheme the young people are encouraged to work with people of various different ages and learn the skills of cooperation which they struggle to acquire in the traditional education system. Within the course there are opportunities for the children to gain first aid and health and safety qualifications which again, they wouldn’t be able to achieve within the school environment.

With the course being split between practical and learning activities within sport and health it gives the young people an invaluable opportunity to learn a wide range of life skills and gain GCSE equivalent qualifications. Along with the physical side of the course, Active Barnsey also work with participants looking at further opportunities and employment chances in coordination with the local Connexions office that helps young people assess further learning and employment options.

The ActivFutures project is based at the Shaw Lane Sports Complex and a number of schools have already taken up the programme. For further information or to discuss how your school can get involved with the ActivFutures programme call Development Officer Dave Drumgoon on 01226 736644.
